Rosie Watson Hare at Papple
News at Papple

Our green spaces are now open

We opened Papple Wood to the public in the spring of last year and many visitors have enjoyed exploring the follies, bridges, children’s play area and art installations. Our six-foot-tall hare [designed by local artist Rosie Watson] continues to attract lots of attention and our own Giles Heffer created a magnificent stone badger…possibly to the amusement of the real badgers!

In partnership with East Lothian’s famous food and drink company, Buck & Birch, we’re in the process of establishing a forest garden to add to the biodiversity of our grounds and to provide plants which we can forage and eat! Our fruit garden produced a harvest of such quality in 2022 that we won no fewer than four First Prizes, two Second Prizes and one-Third Prize at the Stenton and District Horticultural Show. Great work Verity and Hugh!

And having sown our wildflower meadow in 2020, we’re nearly ready to open to the public. Surrounded by trees and fringed by Papana Water, this is East Lothian’s largest native Scottish wildflower meadow. It’s a special place. See you in the spring!

Date for your diary. We are opening the garden and wildflower meadow and wood for Scotland’s Gardens Scheme 2023 on the weekend of July 1st and 2nd in 2023
