Multiplicatus

Eric Hewitson (born 1966) is a British contemporary artist known for his abstract, avant-garde works. His artistic practice is characterised by a “decoupage” or collage-style technique that explores geometry, texture, and rhythm.

A rhythmic grid of six rows and four columns of torn paper abstracts, each a microcosm of texture and form, hovers above the surface of an imperial sized sheet. This interplay of raised elements creates a dynamic tension between order and spontaneity, inviting the eye to shift between intimate detail and the larger gestalt. Echoing the language of Abstract Expressionism, the work embraces the raw energy of materiality—edges frayed, compositions instinctual—while variation and repetition weave a quiet narrative of cohesion and difference. Here, the sum does not merely contain its parts; it amplifies them, resonating between micro and macro, between the tangible and the ephemeral.
