Nomonochrome – POA
Jaime GiliYaris GR car, 2024
Cars have historically attracted many artists, a story which begins in the time of the Italian Futurists and Sonia Delaunay who painted a Citroën B12 in 1924, and continues from the 1970s until present day with the BMW Artcars designed by Andy Warhol, Esther Mahlangu and David Hockney, amongst many others.
Jaime Gili is known for his paintings that investigate colour and movement beyond the confines of the canvas, and in 2014 he began Nomonochrome: his series of art cars. Here at Papple Steading, we have the Toyota Yaris GR, a design which channelled the spirit of the World Rally Championship into an affordable performance road car. Taking inspiration from the forms and colours of the landscape in East Lothian, Gili designed this incredible moving painting evoking the rolling hills that surround Papple Steading. Gili collaborated with renowned body-shop expert and metalwork painter Toni Chinchilla in Barcelona, before the car was prepared and customised by British automotive engineering specialist, Lanzante, in England.
